Wood outside, untreated, has a short life. UV bleaches it gray, water gets into the grain, and freeze-thaw cycles open up cracks. Most decks fail not because the wood is cheap, but because the finish on top of it gave up two years ago and nobody redid it.
Restaining isn't just cosmetic. The right product seals the wood against moisture, blocks UV damage, and makes the surface easier to keep clean. Done on time, it extends the life of the deck or fence by years and keeps the wood from needing replacement.
We don't just slap stain over old finish. We clean, strip if needed, sand to bare or near-bare, and apply a stain rated for your wood and exposure. The work shows the day you walk on it, but the real test is how it looks two and three winters later.
The written quote we send spells out the exact scope. Here's the baseline of what comes with every job.
No mystery, no shortcuts. Each step exists for a reason.
Check for rot, loose boards, popped nails or screws, and surface condition. Decide together whether it's a stain job or a stain plus minor repair.
Wash off mildew, gray weathered wood, and old failing stain. Use a stripper or sander where peeling finish has to come off.
Sand to even out grain, remove splinters, and open the wood so it accepts the new stain uniformly.
Brush, roll, or spray-and-back-brush depending on product and surface. Two coats where the product calls for it, with proper dry time between.
Final inspection together. Touch up anything you flag.
We don't quote sight unseen. These are the variables that move the price up or down once we walk your project.
Bigger surfaces take more time and more product. Multi-level decks, large fences, or pergolas add area.
Wood with heavy peeling old stain, mildew, or gray weathering takes much more prep than wood with a fresh coat that needs refresh.
Solid color stains cover better and last longer but hide grain. Semi-transparent shows wood character but needs reapplication sooner.
Spindles, balusters, and decorative rails take more time per square foot than open deck surface.
Loose boards, popped fasteners, or rotted sections we can flag, repair where straightforward, or recommend a carpenter.
Every quote we write is a fixed number with the scope spelled out. Honest quotes, clean job sites, finishes that outlast the next election cycle.
Timelines below are rough estimates. Actual schedules depend on prep, weather, the size of your job, and our current crew workload. The written quote we send locks in real dates.
In Michigan, semi-transparent stains typically last 2 to 3 years on horizontal surfaces (the parts that take rain and sun) and 4 to 6 years on vertical surfaces. Solid color stains last longer. Catch it before the finish completely fails and the prep is much easier.
Solid stain looks like paint, hides wood grain, and lasts longest. Semi-transparent shows the wood but needs more frequent recoats. Clear sealer protects without color but does the least to hide weathering. We'll recommend based on your wood and what look you're after.
Pressure-treated wood needs to dry out before it accepts stain. New PT decks usually need to wait several weeks to several months before staining, depending on weather. We'll tell you if your wood is ready.
Late spring through early fall, on dry wood, with no rain in the forecast for 24 to 48 hours after we apply. We watch the weather window and won't stain into a soaking week.
Often yes. Stripping, sanding, and a solid stain can bring tired wood back. If the boards are rotten or split through, those pieces get replaced first. We'll show you what we find before we commit to staining over a structural problem.
Yes. Same process, same products. Fences in particular benefit from regular staining because they take wind, rain, and ground moisture from below.
